Here is the presentation that Action’s Managing Director, Keith Helfrich, gave at Tableau 2020. In it, he explores the eight relationships in Tableau that provide a framework for understanding the two core semantic behaviors of smart aggregations and contextual joins.

“Like all good relationships, now the logical tables in a Tableau data source can each retain and express their unique individuality. And, for the relationship to work, there also needs to be some agreements!

“Smart aggregations and contextual joins are these agreements. The 8 R’s provide us with a helpful way to understand the many behaviors that can emerge from the same relationship in differing contexts.”
